Honor Your Father and Mother
The promise…
Ephesians 5.15 – 6.6 merits more comment than space allows. We are given the Lord’s multi-generational plan to equip and release children into their destinies. The first of six commandments dealing with interpersonal relationships emphasizes the family, makes the family the center piece of discipleship. Discipline leads to obedience and obedience leads to blessing. Ministers are often asked to stand in the gap when parents either aren’t around or have abandoned their children. When this happens, we must remember we are not a substitute for the nuclear family. The institutional Church isn’t called to disciple children. God intends parents to disciple children. Our job is to come along side parents as they accomplish this. The children are a gift, first to the parents and then to us.
Our mission is to encourage, to equip and to support parents to faithfully disciple their young. When parents are unable to accomplish this, the Lord calls spiritual fathers and mothers to complete His plan.
